Werewolf Hunter, The Legend of Romasanta- Directed by Paco Plaza: DVD

by JoelVanHalen I became interested in seeing this movie after watching the director, Paco Plaza's, amazing collaboration on the film, [REC]. Unfortunately, like the artwork on many horror DVD covers, I would have totally passed this one by. In fact, I didn't even order it for TV Eye (until just now) solely based on the artwork. Little did I know it was from a competent director, AND, starred Julian Sands, whom I have been very fond of since his Warlock days. Also, I love Lions Gate studios for being one of the last independent major studios; but, when they acquire great movies stateside, I wish they would put a little more into the packaging. Otherwise, most people are just going to think that this is just a cheesy werewolf movie, which could not be further from the truth. First of all, Romasanta turns out to be more of a thriller than a horror film. Set in Spain in the 1850s, the constabulary is faced with the mystery of several missing villagers, some of which are turning up in the woods having been mauled by what they think are wolves. This story line follows alongside one in which Julian Sands plays a traveling salesman who has come ...

Jeeves & Wooster: TV Series Complete DVD

by JoelVanHalen   I grew up on Jeeves & Wooster. Actually, I grew up on all of P.G. Wodehouse's novels and stories. I relish and reread them often. To most, the stories may seem a little hokey, but hokey is good when you create such oddball characters and write really funny, light, stories. The Jeeves & Wooster series was one of his most in depth, and he created quite a little universe for these two.   Bertie Wooster, played by House's Hugh Laurie, is a well-to-do, British fop who doesn't work; is reliant on wealthy aunts; is allergic to marriage; and, well, sort of a bungler. Jeeves, played by the Black Adder's, Stephen Fry, his gentleman's gentlemen (that's a valet for all you uncouth), is suave, intelligent, and very resourceful in a pinch. And by pinch, I mean jam, even though there is a lot of pinching of policeman's helmets, paintings, and silver cows. There is also a lot of jam. On biscuits and scones. In fact, stealing makes up the meat and potatoes of many of these Wodehouse adaptations. Besides the nicking of objects, there is a lot of stealing of sweethearts and engagements and getting out of engagements. Love and the thwarting of love, seems to be the cause ...

Z Rock -TV Series Season 1 DVD

by JoelVanHalen   Don't let this press photo fool you, the Z brothers (and drummer) of the band ZO2, are very funny. Not because of the way they look, but because of their brilliantly semi-scripted show on IFC. It is equal parts Flight of the Conchords and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Hopefully that won't turn anyone off, especially the Sunny aspect, but these characters aren't despicable like Sunny. They are very lovable like the Conchords. But unlike the Conchords, these guys aren't struggling so much as they are having an identity crisis. By night, the brothers and drummer, are a Brooklyn band called, ZO2 (like CO2, but better), an awesome (in their eyes) rock band in the vein of Kiss, Led Zeppelin, etc.. By day, they are the children's rock group, The Z Brothers, an awesome, uhm, rock band in the vein of, uh, Yo Gabba Gabba or the Teletubbies? Their conflict arise from the fact that they are, or could be, very successful as a children's group, but ultimately are a rock band living the rock life. They want to make it on their rock chops, not their mom chops, even though they get to make it with some moms along the way.  Also, like the Conchords, they have a manager, but she is actually competent, all the while still being ...

[REC] - Directed by Jaume Balaguero/Paco Plaza: DVD

by JoelVanHalen    Two Spanish directors, finally, knock off the dust and do something different with the whole zombie schtick. Or I should say, zombie aesthetic. For a short while, the Spaniards seemed to have taken the horror crown from the Japanese, and then relenquished to the French. But, they weren't through (neither are the Japanese). Balaguero previously brought some decent horror to Hollywood via The Nameless, The Dark, and Fragile. All had there moments, but none chilled to the bone like Devil's Backbone or the Orphanage. However, with [REC] (record), they really nailed it. FYI, this film has been remade as Quarantine, and made available on DVD in the states, before [REC], which is a terrible shame. I have absolutely no interest in seeing a remake of this fine horror flick.   The film starts innocuosly enough, setting the plot quickly, developing character quickly, and then BAM straight into a situation that carries the rest of the movie. All shot from a news crew's point of view on one handheld camera. That is not a lot of people's favorite, but it is shot expertly as if the directors were filming it themselves. Said news crew is following a group of firemen through a "normal" evening for a general interest, local news program. They ...

Tunnel Rats - Directed by Uwe Boll: DVD

by JoelVanHalen   First of all, (let me say, as many critics who are reviewing this flick will be saying) I can't believe I had the desire to review a Uwe Boll film. Uwe has made a career of making movies based on video games. Most, I have absolutely no desire to see, and I will watch almost anything. Things like Bloodrayne, House of the Dead, the Jason Statham vehicle, In the Name of the King, and the soon to be released Far Cry. I have actually seenAlone in the Dark, and Postal, both of which were actually kinda good. However, Tunnel Rats, I believe is very good. Above and beyond Uwe Boll and even more credible film-maker's standards.    With this film he tries his hand at a Vietnam conflict piece. The direction is really quite good and adept. The writing, nay, I should say the dialog, is pretty weak, but doesn't really hinder the story. Uwe also wrote and produced the flick, but luckily he doesn't ham it up too bad on the character development. And, really, character development isn't needed at all in this movie, opting instead for a more general, all encompassing character of humanity on both sides of the Vietnamese conflict. There are a few dodgey moments ...

Sauna - Directed by Antti-Jussi Annila: Film

by JoelVanHalen   No Domestic Theatrical/DVD Release Date Available Yet   Foreign films definitely have a tendency to kind of meander along, letting things build up, and either go out in a blaze of glory or in an internal, pensive, intellectual fart. Sometimes they can combine both of these feelings. Finland's, Sauna, does both, and all to a very impressive degree, even if you aren't into intellectual farts. And it's not an intellectual movie by any means. It's a horror film. It just gives you much to think about and take away with you. Also, it delivers the horrific goods in the end.   Set in 16th century Finland (under Swedish rule), a group of Finnish and Russian delegates and cartographers are travelling north setting the new borders for both Finland/Sweden and Russia after a 25 year war. Led by two brothers, one a warrior (and a dead ringer for Max Von Sydow), and one an academic, the group must get along with themselves despite sibling and national differences. Also, they must restructure the face of the two nations; deal with their populace; deal with the horrors of their actions in war; and, trek a vast swamp into a mysterious village, and an even ...
